Our flagship offerings include HVO100 biofuel solutions for road freight and intermodal. Our HVO solutions are offered as either in-tank (where feasible) or as an “in-set” solution which can be applied to any lane with the same decarbonisation benefit. On some lanes we can offer bio-methane road freight solutions with a similar decarbonisation profile as HVO100. We can also offer electric truck solutions on certain routes for smaller loads and shorter distances, though this service will be scaled up as our haulier partners accelerate their transition to electric vehicles.

There is usually a small price premium associated with HVO solutions owing to the typically higher cost of the fuel. Intermodal solutions are typically cost-competitive or cheaper than diesel truck solutions. Bio-methane solutions can in many cases be cheaper than the equivalent diesel offering but this is dependant on the availability of gas trucks on a specific lane. Hydro treated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a “drop-in” biofuel which can be used in any modern diesel truck but which exhibits an over 80% lower carbon footprint. It also exhibits significant reductions in particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions at the tailpipe.

We only utilise second-generation HVO100, which is the most sustainable form of HVO which uses waste cooking oil as its feedstock. We only use reputable suppliers who can provide full evidence of their fuel production origins and feedstocks used. Some previous generation HVO fuels utilised palm oil and other food crops in their production which, while exhibiting lower carbon emissions, had an adverse effect on the long term viability and environmental impact of the fuels.

We can provide the necessary fuel certification certificates on request in line with the ISCC system and country-specific renewable fuel assurance schemes.

We calculate freight emissions in line with the methodologies laid out in the GLEC framework, ISO 14083 standard and Greenhouse Gas Protocol, through integration with the accredited Pledge API. Our internal system tracks the vehicle type, tonnage per load, and journey distance all of which are fed in as key inputs to the calculation. The journey distance is often known exactly through the use of our driver app; in other cases a class-leading routing system is used for a best estimate of the distance travelled.

Because the supply of second-generation HVO100 is geographically constrained as production scales up, an “in-tank” HVO solution may not be possible or economically feasible on some lanes. “In-setting” is an innovative solution wherein the equivalent amount of HVO needed for your shipment is used in comparable vehicles better-located for HVO supply locations. An approved “book & claim” system is then used to ensure that the use of fuel for your load balances and that the carbon credit for the biofuel is ring-fenced to the customer who procured the biofuel solution. This is a growing and popular industry practise in line with the Smart Freight Centre’s Market-Based Measures Accounting Framework. The “one atmosphere” benefits from the same carbon emission reductions as if the fuel was used in your vehicles. The appropriate certificates confirming the fuel use and allocation of carbon credits are then issued to the shipper.

Zeus believes that the future of net zero road freight lies in direct electrification, not hydrogen. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle solutions for road freight present a number of shortcomings relative to battery electric vehicles including: less advanced technology readiness and hence a longer timeline for at-scale deployment, a significantly lower “well-to-wheel” efficiency, higher vehicle capital costs, higher anticipated fuel costs should green hydrogen be used and significantly higher carbon emissions should non-green hydrogen be used.
